Our mission is to provide state of the art health care that is of the highest possible quality, is compassionate, comprehensive and easily accessible to patients and is also responsive to referring physicians.

We create an enriched and supportive environment where each member of the department enjoys the opportunities to achieve maximal success, productivity and efficiency.

We develop and maintain innovative and integrated research programs which make fundamental discoveries and bring them to clinical practice.

We educate and train thoughtful professionals who approach patient care and research in a critical and scholarly fashion.

The Department of Medicine supports a broad array of exceptional research programs featuring many nationally known academic physicians and scientists.

Our basic, translational, and clinical research programs continue to grow rapidly. We are ranked 17th nationally in NIH funding among Departments of Internal Medicine. Our goal is to rank in the top 5 nationally. Research funding in all areas has doubled over the past four years, and we have seen our largest increase in federal funding.

Research support has increased from $20,000,000 (total dollars) in FY97 to more than $82,000,000 in FY05. The current distribution by sponsor includes 67% federal, 23% pharmaceutical, and 10% society, foundation and miscellaneous other state and local agencies.

Recognition of our outstanding research programs is attested by the election of our faculty members to the American Society for Clinical Investigation. With these most recent elections and new appointments, the School of Medicine now has 37 members of the ASCI, a striking increase in the membership with election of 10 faculty member within the last three years.

Clinical Practice Patient care is our core mission and important for all of our educational and research programs. As the Department continues to grow we continue to strategize to keep that same mission alive by providing state of the art health care that is of the highest possible quality, is compassionate, comprehensive and easily accessible to our patients. We devote enormous efforts in continuous quality improvement in the operations of our outpatient and inpatient practices and strive for excellence in patient satisfaction. Our goal is to ensure that our patients experience is as pleasant as possible.

The Department has established many new outpatient locations throughout the entire greater Pittsburgh region to allow our patients greater access to our services and providers, including the top specialized physicians at each location. All patients are seen within three working days of asking for an appointment. We provide easy access to physician referrals from the community for both inpatient and outpatient services. We also have a highly organized hospitalist service that provides 24 hour coverage for inpatient care.
